Exploring the Haors of Netrakona
Haors are special type of Inland Wetlands of Bangladesh situated in thenorth-eastern zone of the country. They are fresh water (seasonal) inland lakes. Considering the importance of Haorin the national economy as well as of its hydrological characteristics and very rich biodiversity, it wasfelt necessary to prepare a separate volume of the report, exclusively dealing with Haors.
Netrakona is a part of Mymensingh Division. It is situated in the northern part ofBangladesh, near the Meghalayan border. There are four main rivers in Netrakona and they are: Kangsha, Dhala, Magra, and Teorkhali. It has an area of 274,400 haand apopulation of 2,229,642 (Census, 2011). There are 10 Upazilasin this district and they are Atpara, Barhatta, Durgapur, Khaliajuri, Kalmakanda, Kendua, Madan, Mohanganj,Netrakona Sadar and Purbadhala Upazila. The economy of Netrakona is largely agrarian.Susang Durgapur, an Upazila of Netrakona, is one of the major sources of country's China-Clay used for ceramic products. It has 52 Haors and they provide wide varieties of fishes.Birishiri is a hill of white clay,situated in this district and is one of the most beautiful placesof Bangladesh.Dingi Pota, Medar Beel, Talar are some of the major Haors of Netrakona.
There are 10 Upazilas and 52 Haors in Netrakona District. Among these Upazilas,Durgapur,Kendua, Netrakona Sadar and Purbadhala do not have any Haors.Haors of the rest 6Upazilas and their number of Haors (Upazila wise) of Netrakona District.

Some Haors are stretched over more than one Upazila, sometimes over more than one district. While recording these Haors, they have been shown in all Upazilas, hence theapparent discrepancy is observed in the total number of Haors.

In Netrakona District,the following Haors are stretched over more than one Upazilas: Bawaeter, Dhali Band, Ganesh, Jagannathpur, Khilkhilir, Mosha Gatir, Pagla andSarisha Bil Haor.

Baraikuri and Medar Beel-2 Haors are stretched over more than one district.
