Exploring the Haors of Maulvibazar

 

Haors are special type of Inland Wetlands of Bangladesh situated in thenorth-eastern zone of the country. They are fresh water (seasonal) inland lakes. Considering the importance of Haorin the national economy as well as of its hydrological characteristics and very rich biodiversity, it wasfelt necessary to prepare a separate volume of the report, exclusively dealing with Haors.

Maulvibazar district is located in the north-eastern borderline of Bangladeshand is bordered by Sylhet district to the north, Tripura (Indian State) is to the south, Assamand Tripura states of India are to the east, Habiganj district is to the west. It has anarea of 279,900 ha anda population of 1,902,000 (Census, 2011). They are7 Upazilas in Maulvibazar and they are Barlekha, Kamalganj, Kulaura, Maulvibazar Sadar, Rajnagar,Sreemangal and Juri Upazila.The rivers Monu, Dholai, Sonai, Fanai, Gopala, Continala, Juri,Bilam etc. run through this district. It has only 3 Haors-Hail, Hakaluki and Kauadighi Haor.Hakaluki Haor is one of Bangladesh's biggest and one of Asia’s largest Haor.It hasalsobeendeclared as Ramsar Site. Lawachara National Park, Madhabkunda Falls are some of thefamous tourist spots in this area.

There are 7 Upazilas and 3 Haors in Maulvibazar District. Among these Upazilas, Kamalganj does not have any Haors. Haors of the rest 6 Upazilas and their Nnumber of Haors (Upazila wise) of Maulvibazar District.

  • Some Haors are stretched over more than one Upazila, sometimes over more than one district. While recording these Haors, they have been shown in all Upazilas, hence theapparent discrepancy is observed in the total number of Haors.

  • In Maulvibazar District, Hail Haor is stretched over more than one Upazilas.

  • Hakaluki and Kauadighi Haors are stretched over more than one district.
