Exploring the Haors of Brahmanbaria
Haors are special type of Inland Wetlands of Bangladesh situated in thenorth-eastern zone of the country. They are fresh water (seasonal) inland lakes. Considering the importance of Haorin the national economy as well as of its hydrological characteristics and very rich biodiversity, it wasfelt necessary to prepare a separate volume of the report, exclusively dealing with Haors.
Brahmanbaria district is under Chittagong Division. It is bordered by Kishoreganj and Habiganj district to the north, Comilla district to the south, Habiganj districtand Tripura (Indian State) to the east, The Meghna River and a part of Kishoreganj,Narayanganj and Narsingdi districts to the west. It has an area of 192,700 ha and apopulation of 2,954,000 (Census, 2011). There are 9 Upazilasin Brahmanbaria and they are Akhaura, Ashuganj, Bijoynagar,Bancharampur, Brahmanbaria Sadar, Kasba, Nabinagar,Nasirnagar and Sarail.The rivers Meghna, Titas, Shalda, Hawra, Pagla, Putia, Sonai, Hawra,Ropa, Buri, Bizna, Balua, Bolak, Dholbanga etc. run through this district. There are 7 Haorsin Brahmanbaria among which Dattakhola, Tikkar Par are the largest Haors in Brahmanbaria.
There are 9 Upazilas and 7 Haors in Brahmanbaria District. Among these Upazilas,Ashuganj, Bijoynagar, Bancharampur, Kasba and Nabinagar do not have any Haors.Haors ofthe rest 4 Upazilas and their number of Haors (Upazila wise) of Brahmanbaria District.

Some Haors are stretched over more than one Upazila, sometimes over more than one district. While recording these Haors, they have been shown in all Upazilas, hence theapparent discrepancy is observed in the total number of Haors.
